The West Midlands PAFTAs (Paediatric Awards For Training Achievement) are BACK!!
We hope they help us to celebrate the people and places that make West Midlands Paediatrics great, and provide extra reasons to be cheerful!
There are 7 regional prizes up for grabs and you can make as many nominations, for as many of the awards, as you like.
The Awards night date and venue is to be confirmed... watch this space!
Tell me more about making a nomination?
Anyone can nominate for any of the awards. There is no limit to the number of nominations you can make for each award, so you can really spread the joy for all those people and places you think deserve a special mention.

You don't need a 'seconder' to nominate so it's really easy to make a nomination (or a few!)
What awards are there this year?
There are 7 award categories this year:

Best Junior (ST1-3) trainee

Best Senior (ST4-8) trainee

The Annie Callaghan Award for Best Educational Supervisor
The winners of these awards will also be put forward into the three national PAFTA awards, which are awarded annually at the RCPCH conference.
We also wanted to introduce some regional awards to help recognise the wonderful people and places that make up the West Midlands Paediatric 'Family'. These awards include:

How do you decide who wins?
Once all the nominations have been submitted and the nomination deadline has passed a trainee-led judging panel will assess against the judging criteria to make recommendations as to who should win each prize. They will also take into account if a nominee has received multiple nominations too. However in the spirit of many other regional PAFTAs they will avoid directly consecutive wins for the same person or place. Should any of the judging panel be nominated for any award, they will not be involved in judging that award to ensure fairness.
How do I find out who won?
2022 has presented its own challenges but with less strict social distancing rules. We are currently exploring options for our Awards Ceremony where all nominees and winners will be announced.
We will also publicise winners here on our website and in the regional newsletter. All nominees and winners will receive notification of their nomination or win, with a certificate to keep for their records. This, alongside that warm fuzzy feeling of having been nominated for or even won a PAFTA award.
What are the judging criteria for awards?

We run a regional version of the three national PAFTA awards. The winner of each of these awards is put forward as the West Midlands nominees for the national PAFTA awards.

The Vishna Rasiah Training Hero (Medical) Award
-
This award was named in honour of Dr Vishna 'Vish' Rasiah, a wonderful colleague, passionate educator and renowned neonatologist who created a culture of team building and support that not only positively impacted on trainees he worked with, but rippled around the region.

This award is for someone in a medical role who you think has made a positive contribution to the training experience for West Midlands paediatric trainees, either locally in their department or more widely across the region.
-
The nominee could be a trainee, consultant, SAS doctor, locally employed doctor, or perhaps even a doctor in another specialty.
Training Hero (Clinical) Award
-
This award is for someone in a clinical role who you think has made a positive contribution to the training experience for West Midlands paediatric trainees, either locally in their department or more widely across the region.

The nominee could be a nurse, ANNP, ANP, ACP, Allied Healthcare Professional, Pharmacist, Healthcare Assistant, Midwife, Maternity Support Worker... and any other clinical roles not listed.
Training Hero (Non-clinical) Award
-
This award is for someone in a non-clinical role who you think has made a positive contribution to the training experience for West Midlands paediatric trainees, either locally in their department or more widely across the region.

This could be a member of postgraduate medical education staff, a manager, a rota manager, an administrator, a receptionist, a medical secretary, a member of medical staffing... and any other non-clinical roles not listed here.
What about the Janet Anderson award?
This important award will continue to be awarded via the Midlands Regional Paediatric Society. PAFTAs is not a replacement for the Janet Anderson award, rather it is a trainee-led opportunity to celebrate even more wonderful people and places that make up West Midlands Paediatrics.
